McGUFFEY FAMILY GENEALOGY


I. WILLIAM "Scotch-Billy" McGUFFEY was born in 1742, in Galloway, Wigtownshire, Scotland. 1 He married ANN McKITTRICK 2 , who was born in 1747, in Scotland. She was the daughter of WILLIAM McKITTRICK, who was born in 1720, and AGNES HERON. They landed in Philadelphia with their three children in August 1774, and settled in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania. William enlisted in the Continental Army on May 27, 1779. In 1789, the family moved west to Finley Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. They both died at their son's farm in Ohio--Ann on February 6, 1826 3 , and William in 1836.

3. ELIZABETH "Betsy" McGUFFEY was born about 1770, in Scotland. She died while the family was crossing the mountains of Pennsylvania in 1789 and was buried along the trail.

II. ALEXANDER "Sandy" McGUFFEY, son of WILLIAM and ANN (McKITTRICK) McGUFFEY, was born November 22, 1767 5 , in Scotland. He served as an Indian scout in the Ohio Valley from 1790 until after General Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1794. In December of 1797 6 , he married ANNA HOLMES, daughter of HENRY and JANE (RONEY) HOLMES of Finley Township. She was born in 1776. The newlyweds lived with Anna's parents until 1802, when Alexander moved his family to Coitsville Township, Trumbull (now Mahoning) County, Ohio. Anna died January 20, 1829. Alexander married the widow MARY (HEMPHILL) DICKEY in February of 1831, in Virginia. She was born about 1791, in Maryland. She had at least one child from her first marriage, a daughter named MARY DICKEY, born about 1819. The McGuffeys moved to Shenango Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where Alexander died March 1, 1855 7 .

1. JANE McGUFFEY 9 was born February 9, 1799, in Finley Township. She married (1) JOSEPH STEWART 10 on February 18, 1819, in Trumbull County. She married (2) DAVID YOUNG on May 13, 1825, in Trumbull County. Jane died July 9, 1852, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Newcastle, Pennsylvania.

6. ELIZABETH "Betsy" McGUFFEY was born in 1809 in Coitsville Township. She married JOHN NEAL and went to Iowa. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and died in Libby Prison.
7. ASENATH McGUFFEY was born November 5, 1811, in Coitsville Township. She married JOHN RAINEY on June 6, 1832.

10. MARGARET "Margie" McGUFFEY was born in 1834. She married ANDREW DUNLAP between 1860 and 1863. They were living in Wheeler, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in 1880.

III. CATHERINE McGUFFEY, daughter of WILLIAM and ANN (McKITTRICK) McGUFFEY, was born December 22, 1768, in Scotland. She married JAMES LITTLE in 1791, and resided in Finley Township until his death in October of 1814. Catherine moved to Ohio with her daughter's family in 1819 12 , and later moved to Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana. She died there on October 4, 1855, and was buried in Robison's Chapel Cemetery.

WILLIAM HOLMES McGUFFEY, son of ALEXANDER and ANNA (HOLMES) McGUFFEY, was born September 23, 1800 14 , in Finley Township. He was teaching at subscription schools by the time he was 14 years old. He accepted a professorship in ancient languages at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in February of 1826, before receiving his B.A. from Washington College. While in Oxford, William met HARRIET ELLIOTT SPINING 15 , daughter of ISAAC and CATHERINE (PIERSON) SPINING of Dayton. She was born October 29, 1804. The couple married at her family home in Dayton on April 3, 1827. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister March 29, 1829, preaching occasionally at the University and in nearby Darrtown. In 1833, McGuffey was approached by the publishing company of Truman and Smith to write a set of eclectic readers. The first two in the famous series were published in 1836, the same year McGuffey resigned from Miami University. He served as president of Cincinnati College from 1836 to 1839, when he accepted the presidency of Ohio University. He resigned from that position in 1843 and moved his family back to Cincinnati. The family moved into his brother Alexander's home and William taught at Woodward College from 1843 to 1845. In 1845, he accepted a professorship in moral philosophy at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. Harriet died while visiting relatives in Dayton in July of 1850, and was buried there, in Woodlawn Cemetery. On September 2, 1851, William married LAURA P. "Lura" HOWARD, daughter of HENRY HOWARD, dean of the University's medical school. She was born December 31, 1818. William died May 4, 1873 14 , and was buried in University Cemetery, Charlottesville, at the request of the University faculty. Laura was buried beside him after her death.

5. EDWARD MANSFIELD McGUFFEY was born May 18, 1838 17 , in Cincinnati. He died September 4, 1839, in Athens, Ohio.

6. ANNA McGUFFEY was born May 5, 1853, in Virginia. She died of scarlet fever May 3, 1857.

V. HENRY McGUFFEY, son of ALEXANDER and ANNA (HOLMES) McGUFFEY, was born May 9, 1802 18 , in Finley Township. He studied medicine in Newcastle, Pennsylvania, where he met and married NANCY DICKSON about 1822. She was born about 1801 and died in 1864, in Colmer, Illinois. They had seven children born to them in Claysville, Pennsylvania, five of whom survived. They were living in Trumbull County, Ohio, with seven children at the time of the 1830 census. Three more children were born in Boone County, Kentucky, where the family moved in 1836. Henry married LAURA BERRY soon after Nancy's death. He died in 1877, in St. Mary's, Illinois, and was buried there 19 .

VII. KATHERINE McGUFFEY 11 , daughter of ALEXANDER and ANNA (HOLMES) McGUFFEY, was born about 1807, in Coitsville Township. She married JAMES MILLIGAN 25 , son of JOHN and MARGARET MILLIGAN. He was born between 1805 and 1810, in County Tyrone, Ireland, and emigrated to Ohio with his parents about 1818.

VIII. ALEXANDER HAMILTON McGUFFEY, son of ALEXANDER and ANNA (HOLMES) McGUFFEY, was born August 13, 1816, in Coitsville Township. When his brother William went to work at Miami University in 1826, Alexander went with him and was enrolled at the University's grammar school. He attended Miami University until 1831 26 and then taught briefly in Burlington, Kentucky. He taught English and languages at Woodward College while attending the Cincinnati Law School. He opened a law office in Cincinnati after passing the bar in 1839. That same year he married ELIZABETH DRAKE, daughter of DANIEL and HARRIET (SISSON) DRAKE. Alexander assisted his brother with the famous readers and was alone responsible for the 1838 speller and the fifth reader. The family lived at 300 Southern Avenue, Mount Auburn, Ohio, and owned a farm in Lebanon, Ohio. Elizabeth died in September of 1864, and in 1866 Alexander married CAROLINE VIRGINIA RICH, daughter of SAMUEL HEATH and FLORENCE M. (DOTY) RICH of Boston, Massachusetts. She was born in 1839. Alexander died June 3, 1896, and Caroline died in 1905.

2. CHARLES D. McGUFFEY was born about 1842. He lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and married three times. One of his wives was JULIA AUGUSTA CLARK, whom he married on October 30, 1871, in Knox County, Tennessee.
3. HARRIET "Etta" McGUFFEY was born about 1843. She died of cholera in 1849.

9. WILLIAM H. McGUFFEY was born about March of 1860. He was a Methodist minister and vice-president of the Southern Railroad. He married (1) SALLIE TRUMBELL on June 1, 1883, in Hamilton County, Tennessee. She died soon after marriage and William married (2) ANNE YAGO, an actress. William was living in Milford, Ohio, in 1919.

11. MARGARET McGUFFEY was born in 1870 28 , in Ohio. She was a librarian at the Boston Public Library and later worked on the Braille project at the Library of Congress. She died in 1927, in Washington, D.C.
12. AGNES McGUFFEY was born about 1873, in Ohio. She married CHARLES B. CROCKETT, Jr., in Florida. She died in 1890 29 .
13. WINTHROP McGUFFEY was born about 1875, in Ohio. He died in 1896, while a junior at Harvard University.

IX. HARRIET McGUFFEY, daughter of ALEXANDER and MARY (HEMPHILL) McGUFFEY, was born in 1832. She married JOHN LOVE before 1858. He was born about 1824. He earned his living as a sawyer. They were living in Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in 1858, and in Worth in 1863. They had at least two children.

X. MARGARET LITTLE, daughter of JAMES and CATHERINE (McGUFFEY) LITTLE, was born about 1792 in Pennsylvania 12 . She married HENRY HENRY in 1808, in Pennsylvania. He was born about 1770 and came from Londonderry, Ireland, in 1792. He earned his living as a farmer. They were living in Fairfield Township, Butler County, Ohio, in 1820, but soon moved to Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana. Henry died between 1850 and 1860. Margaret then went to live with her youngest son, Henry Lee Henry. There were twelve children in all 32 .

XI. MARY HAINES McGUFFEY, daughter of WILLIAM HOLMES and HARRIET ELLIOTT (SPINING) McGUFFEY, was born January 20, 1830 35 , in Oxford. She married WILLIAM WALKER STEWART, a physician in Dayton, Ohio, on June 15, 1854. He was born in Pennsylvania, and died September 26, 1872. She died April 28, 1910, at the Lenox Hotel in Pasadena, California.

XII. HENRIETTA C. "Henny" McGUFFEY, daughter of WILLIAM HOLMES and HARRIET ELLIOTT (SPINING) McGUFFEY, was born July 10, 1832, in Oxford. She attended Mrs. Beatty's boarding school in Steubenville, Ohio. She married ANDREW DOUSA HEPBURN on July 10, 1857. He was born November 14, 1830, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the son of SAMUEL and REBECCA (WILLIAMSON) HEPBURN. Andrew was president of Miami University from 1871 to 1873 and a professor in the English department there for many years. He served as president of Davidson College in North Carolina from 1877 to 1885. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He died February 14, 1921, in Oxford. Henrietta died March 17, 1922, in Oxford.

XV. ANNA "Annie" McGUFFEY, daughter of ALEXANDER HAMILTON and ELIZABETH (DRAKE) McGUFFEY, was born about 1845. She married HENRY ALBERT MORRILL 40 on November 21, 1867. He was born February 14, 1835, in Potsdam, New York, the son of SAMUEL and MARTHA (TILTON) MORRILL. He was her father's law partner and a professor at Cincinnati Law School from 1869 to 1908. They had at least four children.

XVI. ALICE McGUFFEY, daughter of ALEXANDER HAMILTON and ELIZABETH (DRAKE) McGUFFEY, was born about 1850. She married JAMES LAURENCE LAUGHLIN, son of HARVEY and MARY MINERVA (MILLS) LAUGHLIN, in September of 1875. He was born April 2, 1850, in Deerfield, Ohio. He graduated from Harvard University in 1873 and received his Ph.D. in 1876. He was a professor at Harvard from 1878 to 1888, and at the University of Chicago from 1892 to 1916. Alice died in 1880. He married (2) MARY (CRAMER) CURTIS, by whom he had a son, LAURENCE CRAMER LAUGHLIN. James died November 28, 1933, in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.

XVII. HELEN B. McGUFFEY, daughter of ALEXANDER HAMILTON and ELIZABETH (DRAKE) McGUFFEY, was born about 1857. She married ROBERT HENRY PARKINSON, son of ROYAL and JUANNA (GRIFFIN) PARKINSON, in 1878. He was born August 10, 1849, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He received his A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1870 and took the bar exam in St. Louis. He practiced law in Cincinnati before moving to Chicago in 1893. Helen died in 1925, and Robert died December 26, 1927.

XVIII. KINGSLEY RICH MacGUFFEY 30 , son of ALEXANDER HAMILTON and CAROLINE VIRGINIA (RICH) McGUFFEY, was born in February of 1880, in Ohio. He married SARAH ST. JOHN CUST in 1921. He died March 4, 1959, at Santos, Brazil.

Children:
1 HENRY HEATH MacGUFFEY was born in 1928. He served in World War II, and was killed in an accident in 1950.

XIX. WILLIAM HENRY, son of HENRY and MARGARET (LITTLE) HENRY, was born January 6, 1809, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. His wife was SARAH MALINDA. She was born about 1816, in North Carolina. William died about 1873.

SKINNER on February 18, 1836, in Fayette County, Indiana. She was born about 1817, in Virginia. They moved from Fayette County to Rush County, Indiana, between 1850 and 1860. He married (2) ROXINEA M. SKINNER on May 19, 1864, in Fayette County.

XXI. JOHN HENRY, son of HENRY and MARGARET (LITTLE) HENRY, was born February 1, 1817, in Washington County. He married ELIZABETH CHAPMAN on May 6, 1841, in Fayette County. She was born about 1822, in Pennsylvania. He earned his living as a shoe maker.

XXII. HENRY LEE HENRY, son of HENRY and MARGARET (LITTLE) HENRY, was born April 10, 1834, in Fayette County, Indiana. He married HANNAH JANE HAINES on March 6, 1858, in Fayette County.

XXIII. CHARLES McGUFFEY "Charlie" HEPBURN, son of ANDREW DOUSA and HENRIETTA C. (McGUFFEY) HEPBURN, was born August 19, 1858, in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Charles attended Davidson College in North Carolina, graduating in 1878. He married JULIA MARIETTA "Judy" BENEDICT, daughter of SAMUEL and SARAH BENEDICT of Cincinnati 44 , on October 10, 1891, in Marietta, Georgia. She was born about 1870. He received his LL.B. from the University of Virginia in 1880. In 1908, he received an honorary degree of LL.D. from Miami University. Charles was also a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. He practiced law in Cincinnati from 1881 to 1903, when he accepted a professorship in law at Indiana University. He served as dean of the law school there from 1918 to 1925. He died July 10, 1929, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

XXIV. ALBERT HENRY MORRILL, son of HENRY ALBERT and ANNA (McGUFFEY) MORRILL, was born June 20, 1875, in Cincinnati. He received an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1897, and an LL.B. from the Cincinnati Law School in 1900. He married LILY LOGAN, daughter of THOMAS MULDRUP and KATE V. (COX) LOGAN, on June 28, 1905, in Algoma, Buckingham County, Virginia. Albert served in the Artillery Corps of the United States Army in 1918, and was president of The Kroger Company from 1930 to 1942. He died of a heart attack September 13, 1942, in Montgomery, Ohio.

XXV. ALICE McGUFFEY MORRILL, daughter of HENRY ALBERT and ANNA (McGUFFEY) MORRILL, was born about 1879, in Cincinnati. She married DAN RUGGLES. They had at least one child.

XXVI. JESSE SHAW HENRY, son of WILLIAM and SARAH MALINDA HENRY, was born about 1837, in Indiana. He married ELIZABETH A. CROSS on August 9, 1859, in Fayette County, Indiana. She was born about 1837, in Ohio.

Children:
1. LINDWELL HENRY 46 was born in April of 1860, in Indiana.

XXVII. WILLIAM ELMER HENRY, son of JOHN and ELIZABETH (CHAPMAN) HENRY, was born November 7, 1857, near Connersville, Indiana. He received his A.B. and A.M. from Indiana University, in 1891 and 1892 respectively. He married MARGARET ATKINSON RODBERTS, daughter of JUNIUS B. RODBERTS, July 30, 1895, in Indianapolis. She died in 1900 and he married (2) SYLVIA MARTHA ALLEN, duaghter of JAMES FREEMAN ALLEN, March 26, 1903, in Webster Groves, Missouri. William was the state librarian for Indiana from 1897 to 1906. He then became the librarian at the University of Washington from 1906 to 1929. He died March 20, 1936, in Seattle, Washington.

XXVIII. WILLIAM McGUFFEY HEPBURN, son of CHARLES McGUFFEY and JULIA MARIETTA (BENEDICT) HEPBURN, was born October 5, 1900, in Cincinnati. He received his A.B. from Indiana University in 1921, his LL.B. from Yale University in 1928, and his LL. M. from Harvard University in 1930. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. William was a law professor and served as the dean of the law school at Emory University. He married HELEN BRIDGET on June 30, 1926. He died February 28, 1960.

XXIX. CHARLES KEITH HEPBURN, son of CHARLES McGUFFEY and JULIA MARIETTA (BENEDICT) HEPBURN, was born January 31, 1908 47 , in Bloomington, Indiana. He received his B.S. from Indiana University in 1930, an M.D. in 1931, and an M.D. cum laude in 1933. He married KATHRYN HOLADAY on September 15, 1934. Charles died March 12, 1970.

Children:
1. JANET HEPBURN married JOHN FEEMSTER.
2. CHARLES KEITH HEPBURN, Jr.
3. DAVID WILLIAM HEPBURN.
4. BARBARA KATHRYN HEPBURN.

1. The name also appears as Wigtonshire and Gallowayshire. Wigtownshire is part of the Galloway District, but Gallowayshire does not exist.

2. There are several variations on her first name: Anne, Anna, Mary, and Mary Anne. Variations for her last name include: McKitrick, McKiltrick, and McKintrick. Ann McKittrick seems to be the most commonly used form of her entire name.

3. The date also appears as 1834.

4. The International Genealogical Index (IGI) gives William and Ann three other children: John, David, and Ann. No other source indicates that these children were theirs.

5. The year also appears as 1769, but 1767 corresponds more closely with his age at the time of emigration. The full date used is that given by his granddaughter.

6. The year also appears as 1794.

7. The date also appears as March 2.

8. The 1820 census for Ohio lists six girls, but only five names are known.

9. Her first name commonly appears as Jane, but she is referred to as Ann Jane in a brother's letter.

12. Catherine Little is not listed as living with her daughter's family in the 1820 census for Ohio.

13. The manuscript of Sarah Cust MacGuffey places Margaret as a child of William and Ann McGuffey, born June 23, 1768. Nothing else indicates the couple had a fourth child, and Catherine's age at the time of emigration places her birth about 1768-1769.

14. The dates on his gravestone read September 26, 1800, and May 4, 1876.

15. Her last name also appears as Spinning. Her daughter wrote that Harriet was actually baptized Henrietta, but used Harriet as her father called her by that name.

16. The year also appears as 1838. The McGuffeys left Oxford in 1836.

17. The year also appears as 1839.

18. The 1850 census for Kentucky gives his age as 49.

19. The MacGuffey manuscript indicates he went to Kansas.

20. The index to the 1860 census for Illinois gives his name as Phyl; the IGI gives it as Plye.

21. The place of birth indicated in the census does not correspond with the family's known place of residence at the time of birth.

22. In a letter, Henry McGuffey refers to his son, Frank. The 1850 census for Kentucky lists a daughter, Frances, age 10. The 1860 census for Illinois lists a son, F. D., age 19.

23. A Mary McGuffey, age 40, born in Ohio, is listed with the family in the 1860 census for Illinois. A letter of her father's mentions her husband.

24. A letter mentions a Dr. Harris who went to Utah. It is unclear whether this was E. P. Harris. It is also unclear what relation E. P. Harris was to the family.

25. His last name also appears as Melligan.

26. Some sources indicate Alexander graduated from Miami University, but the alumni directory lists him as only attending for his freshman year.

27. His name also appears as Frederick.

28. The 1880 census for Ohio gives her age as 12.

29. The date also appears as 1918.

30. Kingsley officially changed the spelling of his last name to MacGuffey, considered to be the original Scottish spelling.

31. William is mentioned in a letter, but is not listed with the family in the 1860 census for Pennsylvania.

32. The 1820 census for Ohio lists three girls under the age of 10, but only the names of two have been found. It is unknown if the other two children were male or female.

33. The 1850 census for Indiana gives his age as 28.

34. The 1850 census for Indiana gives her age as 23.

35. The date aslo appears as January 30.

36. Her place of birth is given as Ohio in the 1860 census; the IGI gives it as Virginia.
37. Daisy is referred to at the time of her death as the oldest daughter by her aunt. No record of "Daisy" Stewart's birth has been found so it is assumed that Daisy was Mary's nickname as other sources indicate there were only four children.

38. A Miami University report spells her name Catherine and indicates the receipt of materials from her estate about 1953.

39. A letter mentions Mr. Harris having eight children.

40. The name also appears as Morrell.

41. One of these two daughters married ROBERT FULLER, but which is not known.

42. His name also appears as Hays.

43. Her middle initial is given as P. in the IGI and her birthdate as March 13, 1850.

44. One source indicated Julia was from Georgia.

45. The actual year Andrew was born is not yet determined.

46. "Lindwell" is what could be determined from the censustaker's handwriting.

47. Henrietta McGuffey Hepburn has the date as February 1, 1908, in her diary.
